Disaster Preparation: A Prescription for Readiness and Survival

The goal of this project is to make ample use of the biodiversity and environmental kits produced by NNLM to enhance awareness and readiness of disaster preparedness throughout the state of Mississippi by developing a handbook will be widely distributed both in hard copy and digital form at libraries throughout the state. Mississippi, a tornado-prone, has the geographical misfortune of being situated within a major fault line, (the New Madrid Seismic Zone). In Mississippi, the peak tornado season is historically during the spring months, from March through May, with a secondary season in November and December. As of March 2025, Mississippi experienced at least 18 confirmed tornadoes, including an EF4 and an EF3 according to the National Weather Service, and in less than a week in April 2025, 14 confirmed tornadoes. The state is plagued by an extended hurricane season that lasts from June 1st to November 30th with the high likelihood of 2 or more touching down, costing lives and destroyed communities in their wake. Some of its areas are yet recovering from the lingering devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The downside of Mississippi being a mostly rural state is that it is highly susceptible to drought and wildfires, which spread quickly and contaminate its abundant water bodies, making it unsafe for human and animal consumption. Sadly, a major paradox of living in a state known for its pristine appearance – sparkling waterways, abundant forestry, and clear, blue skies – is that air and water quality issues often go unnoticed until they exact an often-irreversible toll on public health.
