Student Engagement

Student Opportunities in NNLM Region 3
NNLM Region 3 is committed to supporting the next generation of information professionals in the health sciences. We offer several pathways for Library and Information Science (LIS) students to develop professional skills, network with experts, and contribute to the field of health literacy.

Student Development Award
Each year, NNLM Region 3 offers a competitive award for LIS graduate students within our region to fund attendance at a Medical Library Association (MLA) chapter conference. Awardees are introduced to the health sciences landscape and trusted National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources.

With coaching from a dedicated NNLM professional, students deliver a presentation on an NLM resource or priority. These presentations are a conference highlight, providing a platform for students to network with and impress potential future employers from across the region. Following the award experience, students submit a brief report on their experience and can even participate in further professional development opportunities through the Region 3 office.

Internships and Practicums
Two interns or practicum students are hosted by NNLM Region 3 each academic year. This program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. Each intern works on a project that corresponds with their specific professional interests while supporting the overarching goals of NNLM Region 3. Interns participate in regular meetings with staff to ensure project alignment and professional growth. They submit weekly progress reports and present their final project deliverables to the NNLM staff at the conclusion of the semester.

Employment Opportunities
NNLM Region 3 believes in the potential of library students as future leaders. We periodically post employment opportunities specifically suited for current students or early-career information professionals.
