Y5 Health Outreach Healthy Choices, Healthy Community: Empowering and Engaging Wyandotte County through Artistic Expression
The ''Healthy Choices, Healthy Community: Empowering and Engaging Wyandotte County through Artistic Expression" project seeks a $24,888 grant to engage the local community in education regarding prevention and positive health behaviors through an art contest to create a 2026 health department calendar. In partnership with the local public library system, the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL), the project will distribute art kits and materials to participants, inviting them to submit artwork inspired by themes of health promotion, such as healthy nutrition, safe housing, and substance use prevention. Thirteen winning pieces, one for each month and a grand prize winner for the calendar cover, will be featured in the 2026 calendar. The calendar will educate the public on dates when the health department will be closed due to holidays and include health events such as National Public Health Week. To support health literacy, the project will distribute educational materials alongside the art contest information and the finalized calendars, promoting accurate, and actionable health information. Educational materials will be informed by, and help connect community members to, NLM resources. By focusing on accessible, community-driven initiatives, the project aligns with the NNLM's goal of advancing public health, increasing access to health information, and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
