Falcons in the Night Sky Star Party
Falcons in the Night Sky In support of Citizen Science Month, Ruth Ann Musick Library at Fairmont State University proposes to host a community Star Party. In addition to observing the night sky using telescopes, participants will learn about the National Science Foundation Globe at Night program and how to locate specific constellations. Participants will submit observational data about night sky brightness using Sky Quality Meters. The event will be coordinated with and receive in-kind support from the Education Resource Center at the NASA Independent Validation and Verification (IV&V) facility in Fairmont, WV. Josh Revels, a NASA Education Outreach Specialist and certified GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) trainer with a wealth of experience in citizen science projects, will provide telescope training for event coordinators, as well as pre-service K-12 teaching candidates, who will receive a training certificate. This project seeks to: • Provide a fun, social space for participants to learn about citizen science,
astronomy and space; • Communicate the impact and importance of citizen science in advancing knowledge; and • Provide information about ways to get involved in citizen science, with the hope of increasing data contribution. Telescopes, accessory kits, Sky Quality Meters, books and other materials used to support the Star Party will be organized into circulating kits through Fairmont State University’s Ruth Ann Musick Library and the NASA Education Outreach Center, which will provide post-event opportunities for broader impact and future citizen science engagement for both students and the public.
