ASL Medical Terminology eBook: Piloting Translation and Production Process

With support from the Region 4 Engagement & Outreach Grant, we aim to develop an innovative American Sign Language (ASL) medical terminology eBook to enhance health literacy among the underserved deaf community. This project addresses a critical gap in accessible health information resources for an estimated 500,000 to 1 million deaf ASL users in the United States. Research indicates that ASL users are nearly seven times more likely to struggle with health literacy compared to non-deaf users of English. This e-Book will serve as a crucial resource to bridge the health literacy gap for deaf ASL users, supporting deaf individuals pursuing healthcare careers, empowering patients with foundational medical knowledge, and enhancing the accuracy of interpreters working in healthcare and allied professions. This project will create up to five eBook chapters and document a replicable process for creating ASL health information resources with increased searchability and accessibility. It will be an open educational resource.
