Connected Camden: Public Wi-Fi and Environmental Monitoring at Community Art Spaces

The Connected Camden pilot project will invest in the purchase and deployment of mesh Wi-Fi technology in Camden, New Jersey, as a key step toward addressing digital and health information inequities. Inspired by and in partnership with Philly Community Wireless, the initiative will test and install public Wi-Fi hotspots at arts-based nonprofits engaged in public programming located in two Camden neighborhoods impacted by air quality issues. Custom landing pages will be developed and highlighted at each site that direct users to reliable health information from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), including MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the NIH Disaster Research Response (DR2). While the primary installations will occur at community arts organizations, a future-facing hub for Philly Community Wireless to expand their free internet infrastructure into Camden is also planned and under current negotiation for Northgate 1 Tower, a 21-story residential affordable housing high-rise, to support long-term expansion.
