Health Literacy in the Laundromat: A Place-Based Outreach Model
Civic Suds will launch Health Literacy in the Laundromat, a place-based outreach initiative designed to increase access to trustworthy health information among underserved families in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. Laundromats—one of the few remaining public spaces where families from all backgrounds routinely spend extended, uninterrupted time—offer a uniquely powerful setting to reach people who often fall through the cracks of traditional public health outreach. By integrating digital signage, printed materials, and live health info hours into these community fixtures, the project will deliver easy-to-understand resources like MedlinePlus and NIH.gov directly into the daily routines of families least likely to engage with clinics, libraries, or online health portals. This trusted, routine engagement combats misinformation, fosters relationships, and encourages preventative health behaviors.
