Y5E Advancing Children’s Health Literacy: Building Community Knowledge One Child at a Time

Alice L. Walton School of Medicine proposes a focused pilot project to develop, implement, and evaluate a reusable nutrition-focused health literacy pocket collection for 2nd grade students and families in Northwest Arkansas. The pilot will be delivered through AWSOM’s existing Literacy Education and Access Program, known as LEAP, in partnership with Cooper Elementary School in Bella Vista, Arkansas. The pocket collection will include curated children’s literature, visual materials, a hands-on nutrition activity, a facilitator guide, and family-facing take-home resources that connect caregivers to reliable National Library of Medicine resources, including MedlinePlus. Medical student volunteers and AWSOM Library personnel will deliver the pilot through existing LEAP programming, collect feedback on reach and usefulness, and refine the kit for continued use by educators, librarians, medical student volunteers, and future AWSOM community outreach programs.
