NAPC Partnership Award: Health Literacy Under the Sun

The goal of this project is to inspire increased active participation in health-related initiatives. MDPLS will improve, enhance and activate outdoor library spaces and supplement health literacy programming in conjunction with the NNLM All of Us Program Center and UM through citizen science and early literacy events. The Library will engage the All of Us community partner to present relevant informational programming for health literacy, and the importance of minority participation and representation in medical research by encouraging enrollment and retention for the All of Us Research Program at least once a month between January and April of 2024 in support of health awareness months and topics. Information will be prominently displayed and distributed from the All of Us partner at libraries beyond the project library and in areas neighboring the centers in Miami-Dade. The All of Us Research Program promotional collateral such as posters, bookmarks, and other items will be displayed prominently at the Westchester Regional Library and Westchester Health and Wellness Center as well as part of the permanent Storywalk to be installed. The Library recently hosted several story walk events with complementary fitness or sensory programming in partnership with Miami-Dade County’s Head Start early childhood education program that have been successful and this is an opportunity to expand the reach and scope of these programs to families that might not be aware of or considering participation in All of Us research otherwise. These activities will also be supported by training opportunities for staff at locations near partner registration locations and additionally complement activities taking place at the soon to be launched Virtual Center at the Naranja Branch Library.
