Earn up to 8 continuing education credit hours towards the Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) from the Medical Library Association. This class is designed for learners interested in providing consumer health information to their community, with a focus on libraries and information centers.
This presentation addresses the NNLM goals to support a highly trained workforce for biomedical and health information resources and data, improve health literacy, increase health equity through information, and increase health information access and use by including information about the NLM/NIH resources MedlinePlus, PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed and PubChem, as well as foundational concepts about health literacy and providing consumer health information to communities.
Each module has its own learning objectives specific to the corresponding Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) competency.
8 separate modules cover Levels 1 & 2 CHIS competencies:
- Know the Community
- Know the Health Consumer
- Knowledge of Subject Matter and Resources
- Evaluation of Health Information
- Communication, Reference, and Instruction
- Literacy and Health Literacy (Level 2)
- Technology and Health (Level 2)
- Ethics and Legal Issues (Level 2)
Modules can be completed in any order.
Each Module takes about 1 hour to complete and includes a reading and a knowledge check.
This class is provided entirely online and self-paced through the Moodle learning management system. There is limited instructor interaction.
