R4 Connections: From CT Scan to 3D Print: An Introduction to 3D Printing in the Health Sciences

Class Experience Level
Beginner

How does a CT scan become a model you can hold? In this beginner-friendly webinar, we'll go live from a de-identified scan to a print-ready file while a print runs on camera, and share how 3D printing is used in clinical care, education, and research at the University of Utah. No printer or experience needed.

Guest speakers: Siddharth Bhawsar, Brandon Patterson, Matt Elliot, and Henry Stroup.

Objectives:
  1. Explain how 3D printing is used in health care (surgical planning, patient education, teaching and research) and how libraries support it.
  2. Describe the steps from a CT scan to a printable model: segmentation, mesh cleanup, export and slicing.
  3. Compare the common printing technologies and pick a sensible one for a given model.
  4. Find free tools, open data, and a library or makerspace near them with a 3D printer.
