This class will be an introduction to data librarianship for early career librarians or librarians considering data librarianship as a path of work. If you have any interest in learning about becoming a data librarian but do not know where to start, this class is an entry point into this field of work. Topics of discussion will include job responsibilities, early career development opportunities, AI, and coding. 

Upon completion of this webinar, students will be able to obtain first-hand insight in this field of work, learn what data librarians are responsible for, learn where to begin when it comes to using AI and coding in data librarianship, and identify further learning opportunities for this career path. 

 

Biographies of panelists:

Alfredo Gonzalez-Espinoza is the Research and Data Services Librarian at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining CMU, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the Department of Biology in the University of Pennsylvania, where he worked on cultural evolution, focusing on western classical music. He holds a BSc in Chemistry, an MSc, and a PhD in Sciences (Physics and Complex Systems) and his research interests are mostly interdisciplinary in the fields of Computational Social Sciences, Cultural Evolution, Digital Humanities, Science of Science and Complex Systems. Outside academia, he enjoys a good espresso, cooking, playing soccer, video games, playing cello and exploring new music and forms of artistic expression.

As the Research Impact Librarian at NYU Langone Health Sciences Library, Loida Pan offer consultations, instruction, and expertise in bibliometrics, open access publishing, and scholarly communication. Loida maintains the Faculty Bibliography, NYU Health Sciences Library’s faculty publication database, and provide customized publication reporting and citation analysis to assist with departmental reports, funding applications, faculty reviews, and institutional reporting. She works closely with faculty and researchers to deepen their understanding of research metrics. Loida's research interests focus on open access, open science, and data citation and reuse. She advocates for the ethical use of research metrics and open access publishing, and is particularly interested in the representation of publication outputs from non-English language sources and the Global South. 

Jocelyn Swick-Jemison (she/her/hers), MLS is a Data Services Librarian at the University of Buffalo (UB) in Buffalo, NY. Jocelyn has a background in computer science and extensive experience as a data manager for large clinical trials at a non-profit research foundation before becoming a librarian. She provides data management and sharing support for UB’s health sciences departments, as well as data literacy instruction. Her research interests include data literacy instruction, health mis/disinformation, and neurodivergence in librarianship.
