Region 7 Presents: Creating a Data Dashboard with Power BI

Power BI is a robust tool within Microsoft365 that can be used to explore, analyze, and visualize your data all in one place. This introductory workshop will use the web version of Power BI to upload a dataset and create a simple visualization and data dashboard to really make your data shine.

Join NNLM for a guest presentation by Jocelyn Swick-Jemison (she/her/hers). Jocelyn is a Data Services Librarian at the University of Buffalo (UB) in Buffalo, NY. Jocelyn has background in computer science and extensive experience as a data manager for large clinical trials at a non-profit research foundation before becoming a librarian. She provides data management and sharing support for UB’s health sciences departments, as well as data literacy instruction. Her research interests include data literacy instruction, navigating health information, and neurodivergence in librarianship.

This online class meets the NLM/NIH strategic plan goal of accelerating discovery and advancing health through data driven research in order to increase health information access and use.

Objectives:

1. Navigate the Power BI Desktop interface

2. Import Excel data into Power BI

3. Create summary statistics (total counts, distinct values)

4. Build at least two visualizations (bar chart and pie chart)

5. Design a simple dashboard with interactive elements 6. Apply basic filters to data
