Building Successful Collaborations with Communities

This 4-week, 12 credit-hour pilot class integrates the theory of community engagement with its application to libraries. The course is designed using the Preparation, Action, Reflection model. We will share step-by-step methods and best practices for engaging with communities to co-design and co-develop library offerings. Participants will learn about the community in which their library is located and develop skills to build constructive relationships and bridge cultural differences. They will gain practical experience with engagement methods and share their experiences in implementing several stages of engagement.

The course is led by Dr. Ling Hwey Jeng, Director of the Texas Woman's University School of Library and Information Studies.

Students are expected to attend a 60 minute live Zoom meeting on the last day of each module at 6 PM PT/ 7 PM MT/8 PM CT/9 PM ET. Zoom dates are below.

  • Module 3 Zoom Session: Thursday, October 5, 2023

Upon successful completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Articulate the role of libraries as community anchor institutions for positive changes
  • Apply appreciative inquiry tools for community coalition building
  • Integrate community development tools into project design for desired changes
  • Reflect on their own role as a grassroots leader in facilitating community engagement.
