Graphic Medicine in Public Libraries: Unique Challenges, Unique Opportunities

Class Experience Level
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

Join members of the Region 7 Graphic Medicine Community of Interest as they discuss how they use graphic medicine in their public libraries and with the communities they serve. The panel discussion will cover ideas for introducing graphic medicine to your library, collection development strategies, programming ideas and free resources to help your library and your community.

This is a great opportunity to connect with other public librarians around graphic medicine and ask questions about what’s worked for them.

Presenters:

Brittany Netherton is Head of Knowledge and Learning Services at Darien (CT) Library and the Public Libraries Liaison for the Graphic Medicine International Collective. Graphic Medicine combines two of her favorite job duties: curating adult graphic novels and disseminating reliable health information into the community. She has presented on Graphic Medicine and other comics topics at San Diego Comic-Con, New York Comic-Con, and various library conferences.

Dave Bartos (he/him) is the Coordinator of Adult Services at Cranston (RI) Public Library, where he focuses on collection development, professional library services, and community programming and engagement. Dave grew up reading comic books and is thrilled to make comics and graphic novels a part of his professional responsibilities, developing the adult graphic novel collection at Cranston’s Central Library and promoting the collection through a wide range of displays and programs. When he's not answering phones at the reference desk, he enjoys sourdough baking, cycling, and defeating his children at board games.

Tatjana Saccio (she/her) is a Reference Librarian at the Nevins Library in Methuen, MA where she specializes in collection development, health information, and inter-library loan services. She attained her Consumer Health Information Specialist certification from the Medical Library AssociationHaving developed the adult graphic novel collection at the Nevins Library, she was inspired to combine her interests by creating unique graphic medicine kits for the public as well. Outside of the library, Tatjana enjoys travel, walking in nature, making healthy meals, and petting as many dogs as she can get her hands on.
